As Proud As A Peacock, As Happy As A Lark
28 February 2017 | Giving Back | Nicky Fitzgerald
One lovely October day last year our guides hosted a group of Emurutoto Primary School children on a game drive/conservation lesson into the Mara Triangle and this is what we received a few days later. The letters made us cry and reminded us of why we do what we do each day. Each letter was beautifully penned in pencil on a precious A4 sheet of paper – I only wish you could see the originals. And please don’t forget that these young children speak English as their third language. I have transcribed these precious letters word for word.

Note from the Editor: Thank you for reading all their letters (there were many more). Emurutoto Primary School, with 725 pupils, is a 15-minute drive from the lodge. Half of the children board in beautiful hostels built by Angels in Africa. We are so proud to take our guests there – they always leave a piece of their hearts behind when they say goodbye. It’s that kind of place.

February 28, 2017What a wonderful story! Loved their letters (seems the lions were almost everyone’s favorite animal), and loved their ambitions (Pilot/Doctor/Lawyer/Guide). So important for them to know and treasure their wildlife AND to have such wonderful goals!

March 1, 2017Hi Yvonne – what is so staggering is that these children go to school 20 minutes from the Mara and have never been there before. And we know that the future of this reserve lies squarely in their hands.

June 25, 2017I think this is a truly remarkable school and the opportunity you provided them to see the wild animals of their own country is so beautiful. Also, so important. I believe they will be the generation that helps turn the alarming trend of poaching around. Are they in need of school supplies? Is there chance to visit this school and perhaps bring pencils, pens, etc? Is it better to donate directly to Angles in Africa?

June 26, 2017Dear Sharon
REPLYI am so delighted you enjoyed reading these wonderful letters from the children. Our guides loved taking them out on their first ever safari into the Mara.
Thank you for enquiring about helping at the schools and I am happy to tell you that you can do all this whilst staying at our lodge. We have taken the advice from the local school principals in our community and they have given a list of required stationery. Our guests can buy a school backpack in our Safari Shop filled with stationery which we then deliver to the schools, We also offer our guests an opportunity to buy text books and school desks. It has been such a success and we have delived hundreds of backpacks over the last two years.
I hope this answers your question?
So looking forward to welcoming you soon
Warm regards from the lovely Mara
Nicky
