A lovely safari lodge balanced on the rim of Africa’s Great Rift Valley, where the sky melts into the endless plains in a vista so wide it takes your breath away. Where the romance of canvas combines with dramatic guest areas, Angama Mara’s distinctive design breaks away from a traditional safari lodge style. You will certainly know that you have arrived.
The lodge’s remarkable setting overlooks what many safari travellers deem the finest game reserve on the continent, Kenya’s Maasai Mara. Angama Mara’s tented suites stretch out over two kopjes on the edge of the escarpment. The third kopje is immediately recognisable as the site where many of the most memorable scenes from Out of Africa were filmed.
Guests are accommodated in spacious Tented Suites, which have been designed for guests’ comfort and are reminiscent of a classical African safari, each with a view as lovely as the next. Every detail has been considered: end-to-end glass frontage, sweeping canvas, decks overhanging the Mara, and inside – polished parquet floors and just the right amount of furniture.
The lodge consists of two totally separate and intimate camps, each with its own guest area. Inspired by the old-world atmosphere of Nairobi’s famous Muthaiga Club, guests dine, read, relax, and enjoy a drink in a place where indoors and outdoors merge into one. The architecture is filled with drama, the red brickwork inspired by local Maasai dwelling finishes.
Deep in the remote south-western part of the Mara Triangle lies a sole-use mobile tented camp accommodating just eight guests in four lovely ensuite tents. This one of a kind camp captures the romance and adventure of the glorious Golden Age of safaris, yet with a lightness of spirit and footprint that will both surprise and delight our guests.
Simply put: perfectly cooked and presented dishes using the best local ingredients. Food that is always delicious, unfussy but oh-so-good to look at; generous and joyful; sometimes surprising; honest and true to who we are; and lastly, food that celebrates Kenya’s finest produce – beef, vegetables, fruits, coffee and tea, amongst others.
