Returning to Angama Mara above Kenya's Mara Triangle is always a thrill. This corner of Africa feels like stepping into a living dream: vast skies, jaw-dropping landscapes, and wildlife that knows how to strike a pose. But this time, the journey wasn’t just special — it was downright epic. Why? Because yours truly, Marco van Embden, CEO of Timeless Africa Safaris, turned the big 7-0. Yep, 70. I know, I know: not a day over 50, right?
Now, birthdays usually mean cake, candles, and maybe a singalong. But when you’re celebrating in one of the most stunning places on earth, cake simply won't cut it. So, my wonderful family and the team at Angama Mara planned a surprise that blew my (age-defying) socks off. Picture this: arriving at the Out of Africa saddle, dressed to the 'safari nines', only to be greeted by a full Maasai naming ceremony.
In Maasai culture, elders are considered the wise keepers of tradition, but let me tell you, having 40 Maasai men and women — plus a tribal elder — celebrate me felt like winning a lifetime achievement award. When they gave me a Maasai name: 'Father of Nations', I couldn't help but chuckle. Forget 'CEO'; this title had serious gravitas.
The ceremony was magnificent, the kind of moment that makes you pause and think; this is the stuff stories are made of. And while we love a good lion sighting or two (don’t worry, the wildlife didn’t disappoint), this time, the animals graciously let our family celebration steal the show. The ceremony was a reminder of life’s connections: to the land, to tradition, to African culture and most importantly, to each other.
When we finally left the Mara — reluctantly, of course — I was struck by the magic of celebrating milestones in Africa. These aren’t just holidays; they’re soulful experiences that bond us, inspire us, and live on in our hearts. As a stalwart African travel professional, it's my mission to share these unforgettable journeys. Because I believe that everyone deserves a moment in the Mara where they've been honoured, uplifted, and called something as majestic as 'Father of Nations.'
