At Angama Mara, conservation and sustainability are so much a part of everything we do. Perched above the Maasai Mara, one of the most ecologically significant and breathtaking landscapes on Earth, we are inspired daily to protect, preserve, and nurture this extraordinary land. Through a series of impactful initiatives, we are actively working to safeguard the natural world, uplift local communities, and create a future for generations to inherit a thriving and resilient ecosystem.
Takataka Day: A Community United for a Cleaner Environment
Twice a month, on the 11th and 22nd, the Angama family and the surrounding community come together for ‘Takataka Day’. ‘Takataka’ means rubbish/litter in Swahili, and these days are dedicated to waste collection, responsible disposal, and fostering a culture of environmental awareness.
The initiative is led by a dedicated team of facilitators:
Under their leadership, the team, together with local community members, participates in clean-up activities. More than just a waste management effort, Takataka Day is a movement to instil lasting environmental responsibility among residents, students, and visitors that extends far beyond the bin.
Tree Planting: Growing a Greener Tomorrow
Few things are as hopeful as planting a tree. Reforestation is a cornerstone of our conservation strategy. Tree planting combats deforestation, enhances biodiversity, improves air quality, and soil health — all while creating more conducive environments for education in local schools.
Working hand-in-hand with nearby schools, we’ve planted trees at:
These efforts help create shaded learning spaces, prevent soil erosion, support local wildlife, and invest in climate resilience and sustainable development. More than just beautifying the landscape, trees planted today are a legacy for tomorrow.
Wildlife Lessons: Inspiring the Next Generation of Guardians
Our commitment to conservation extends to wildlife education. The Maasai Mara is home to some of the world’s most iconic and endangered species, and protecting this biodiversity begins with awareness.
The Angama Mara guiding team conducts wildlife motivational talks in schools and communities along the Siria Escarpment. Topics include:
Through these lessons, we aim to nurture a deep respect for wildlife and inspire local communities, especially young people, to become passionate stewards of nature.
At Angama Mara, sustainability isn’t a checklist — it’s a way of thinking and making decisions. From reducing our carbon footprint to promoting eco-conscious tourism, every action is grounded in our respect for the land and its people.
Each tree we plant, each piece of litter we collect, and each conversation we spark brings us one step closer to a healthier planet.
Together, we can make a lasting difference.
