There is nothing quite like walking into a room full of Angama smiles. This time, it was for a refresher training with the teams at Angama Mara and Angama Amboseli.
What a privilege it is to work with such an enthusiastic and cheerful bunch. The journey through the past ten years with Angama remains a powerful reminder of why I love what I do. It was especially meaningful that my colleague Regan James joined me for her first experience of Angama and its thoughtful guest delights; she was smitten from the start.
To see hospitality at its best in action day after day is something to behold. I would expect nothing less from a team that has held a place in my heart since Angama Mara opened in 2015. Angama Safari Camp, which followed soon after, continues to do an exceptional job creating an authentically wild experience without sacrificing comfort. And Angama Amboseli, which celebrated its second birthday last year, has embraced the service ethic so naturally that it feels far older than it is.
During our sessions at both lodges, we revisited Angama’s five core values. Each carries behaviours that run deep, but in essence, they are:
Joy – In everything we do: Swahili – Furaha
Honesty – Always: Swahili – Uaminifu
Courage – Never falters: Swahili – Ujasiri
Respect – Is earned: Swahili – Heshima
Ubuntu – I am who I am because we are
These values are ingrained in the DNA of every team member, and it was inspiring to see them lived so fully — in the classroom, where we laughed, sang, danced, drew, raced one another and delivered speeches — and equally in the service before and after each session. Nothing was ever too much trouble.
At Angama Amboseli, hospitality felt instinctive, woven into every conversation through pride, warmth and generous attention to detail. We were deeply encouraged by the team’s eagerness to learn, openness to new ideas, and hunger to grow. Then, as if to bless the week, Mount Kilimanjaro appeared during one of our sessions — a breathtaking reminder of where we were and why it mattered to protect the historic ‘pinch point’ migratory corridor between Amboseli National Park and the Chyulu Hills. Who would have thought that hospitality could help this endeavour?
At Angama Mara, the lessons deepened. The team’s sense of ownership and pride is unmistakable, undoubtedly shaped by 85 original staff members who still serve today. That level of retention speaks volumes, and their commitment shone through in every interaction.
Together, these experiences reaffirmed what we at Fox Browne Creative believe: hospitality is not just about luxury or design alone, but about people who care deeply and ensure that every detail tells a story.
Our time at Angama was both a classroom and a mirror, reflecting the beauty of thoughtful service. As we left the Mara, we carried with us a renewed appreciation for what it means to make people feel seen, valued and at home — no matter where in the world.
A special thanks to Ibrahim at Angama Amboseli for his patience with our many questions, and to Josephat at Angama Mara, who never left our side and helped us in a myriad of ways.
