I have the joy of overseeing the Angama Academy at Angama Mara — a truly fulfilling journey where I have watched the next generation of hospitality professionals grow and thrive. Giving young students a chance to discover what a career in hospitality could look like.

The Angama Academy began with a clear purpose: to nurture and train young people from the neighbouring communities (of both Angama Mara and Angama Amboseli) by offering hands-on experience in a working lodge environment. We believe that exceptional hospitality goes beyond just offering world-class service — it’s about empowering the next generation to carry the torch forward. This belief sits at the heart of the Academy’s mission, and it’s been incredible to watch the first group of students grow in confidence and skill.

We started with six students. The selection process is straightforward but meaningful: a candidate must have graduated from Form Four, have a good grasp of English and have a positive relationship with the community. They submit a 500-word motivation letter along with a two-minute video. Each student also shares where they see themselves thriving — whether in the kitchen, housekeeping, repairs and maintenance, guiding or service.

The three-month programme builds skills, fosters leadership, and champions sustainability and community impact. Each day starts early for the students, just like it does for the Angama team.  Guided by the Heads of Department, they dive deep into the fundamentals of their chosen fields. Those shadowing Butlers learn the art of food and drink presentation, while those in housekeeping are trained on the nuances of maintaining the high standards expected at a property like Angama. It’s a hands-on and immersive experience, where learning by doing is the only way.

Naturally, challenges are part of the journey. One of the biggest is adapting to the high to the high-performance pace of Angama — where attention to detail is crucial. But with close mentorship, the students build confidence and resilience.

Looking ahead, I hope the Angama Academy continues to evolve into a hub of excellence that nurtures creativity, leadership, skill, and empowers students to make a meaningful impact in both their careers and their communities.

A Note from an Angama Way Student:

I joined the Angama Academy as one of six students. From day one, it was clear this programme wasn’t just about skills; it was about growing as a person. We covered everything from customer service and hotel management to room care, guiding and even maintenance.

What stood out for me the most was how much I learned about empathy, listening, and problem-solving. Guest service became my favourite subject. I saw just how powerful great hospitality can be when it’s done with care.

By the end, I saw not just myself, but all my fellow students grow in confidence and ability. I was proud to be part of the next generation of Kenyan hospitality that encourages leadership, community and personal development.
