The 8th edition of the Mara Cup marked a defining chapter in the tournament’s history, with the return of Angama as the primary sponsor. Spearheaded by Angama Mara General Manager, Collins Randiga, this renewed partnership was driven by a clear and powerful vision: to bring people, communities, and lodges together through football.
More than just a competition, the Mara Cup has evolved into a unifying platform for the entire Maasai Mara ecosystem, and the 2025 edition proved exactly that.
A total of 15 lodges participated, divided into Group A and Group B, setting the stage for five weeks of intense, emotional, and highly competitive football.
Group A featured:
Fig Tree Camp, Balloon Safaris, Mara Bush, Ritz-Carlton, Sopa, Simba, JW Marriott, and Hot Air Balloon.
Group B consisted of:
Serena, Angama Mara, Olonana, Kichwa Tembo, Little Governors, Main Governors, and Karen Blixen.
Every match was played with passion, pride, and a sense of urgency. Results mattered, and emotions ran high. Celebrations, heartbreaks, debates, and moments of pure joy unfolded along the touchlines.
For five weeks, football was not just watched in the Mara; it was lived. Fans stood shoulder to shoulder by the pitch, reacting to every goal, decision, and missed chance. Players carried the weight of expectation not only for their teams, but for their lodges and colleagues. Rivalries intensified, friendships were tested, yet respect never wavered. The soccer fever was real. The Mara Cup became the conversation of the week, every week.
The tournament climaxed in a highly anticipated final between Angama and Serena, two giants of the Mara Cup. The final lived up to its billing: intense, competitive, and emotionally charged from the first whistle.
Angama emerged victorious, lifting their fifth Mara Cup title, further cementing their legacy in the tournament’s history. Serena, a four-time champion, once again showed why they remain one of the most consistent and respected teams in the competition.
Strong performances throughout the tournament were also delivered by Fig Tree Camp and Balloon Safaris, whose discipline, depth, and determination stood out across the five weeks.
Beyond the trophy, the Mara Cup also celebrated individual and collective excellence, with awards recognising standout performances, including the tournament winners and runners-up, the best player of the tournament, the outstanding goalkeeper, the top scorer and the best referees. These recognitions reinforced the tournament’s commitment not only to competition but also to fairness, professionalism, and the growth of football standards within the Mara community.
The final was graced by distinguished guests whose presence elevated the occasion: Macdonald Mariga FKF Vice Chairman, former Kenya international, Inter Milan player, and the first Kenyan to win the UEFA Champions League, Nick Kimanthi Team Manager, Harambee Stars, Ghost Mlee radio presenter (Radio Jambo ) and former Harambee Stars coach, Dennis Oliech Kenya’s all-time top goal scorer and national icon, famously known as The Menace and Titus Mulama, former Harambee Stars player.
Their attendance reinforced the importance of the Mara Cup as more than a local tournament; it is a respected platform for football development, mentorship, and community engagement.
