My first trip within Africa and my first journey as Angama’s design curator was full of firsts and soulful experiences. No matter what time of day or night it is, the norm is to be welcomed with warm smiles and waves. It wasn’t long before I understood why so many guests describe Angama as a feeling of coming home.
Angama Amboseli was my first destination, and I arrived in the evening, flanked by the enormous (and sometimes shy) Kilimanjaro, which made me feel grounded. The entire lodge was built on the philosophy of intertwining with the environment. The form and lodge structure were designed around contrast: soft, smooth interiors set against a textured exterior. With elephants all around, their dung became part of the building material — a natural way to share their home. Every detail brings the wild a little closer. Look closely: the curve of a step, the mountain caught in a mirror, the pool built so elephants can wander up for a drink.
Experiencing the earthy textures, the whispering fever trees, and the rhythmic sound of zebras grazing nearby, everything seemed to pull me deeper into the landscape.
Then came the Angama Mara, perched high up on the Rift Valley. It felt like I was in the clouds, seeing as far as my eyes could reach. This feeling changed as I walked to my Tented Suite, where thick wooden and green canopies hugged me as I wove my way through to another high vantage point from my suite. I almost forgot how high I truly was.
Each lodge tells its own story through architecture. Amboseli’s grey, rounded forms speak to the elephants and Mount Kilimanjaro — solid, majestic, enduring. The Mara, with its warm red brick tones, echoes the earth it’s laid upon. Amboseli’s circular guest areas invite closeness, while the Mara stretches confidently along the escarpment, vast and breathtaking.
What I love most about each space, and what speaks to my inner design soul, is the essential minimalism that runs through everything. We’re not collectors of 'stuff.' Instead, we’re creators and collaborators, shaping objects that serve multiple purposes and choosing materials that tell stories of intention, sustainability, and beauty. Every detail feels considered, every texture purposeful — nothing extra, yet nothing missing.
Conversations with Faith and Emily, our incredible guest experience leads in Amboseli, opened my eyes to how design influences emotion — how a honeymoon, a family celebration, or a milestone birthday unfolds in these spaces.
I was struck by the very different, deliberate, and intuitive design touchpoints at each lodge. The Mara dances between delicate and modern antiquity, with brass and copper highlights held in fine balance. Amboseli, by contrast, has grounded, tactile feels, rugged textures, and earthen tones.
I experienced all of our delights. By the end, I was left wondering what exactly makes these places so magical. Is it the laughter that lingers in the air, the textures that beg to be touched, the flavours that surprise your palate, or the view that steals your breath?
Maybe it’s all of it, blended perfectly with a healthy dose of curiosity and the thrill of discovery.
